COME, HOLY SPIRIT

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love.

Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be created;

And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth. LET US PRAY.

O God, who didst teach the hearts of Thy faithful people by sending them the light of Thy Holy Spirit, grant us by the same Spirit to have right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in His holy comfort.

Through Christ Our Lord. Amen

O Holy Spirit, sweet Guest of my soul, abide in me and grant that I may ever abide in Thee.

Day 31

COME, HOLY SPIRIT. . .

Father was leaving the home for some hours, and the fire had just been started. It had caught and was burning. Someone suggested adding an extra log to the fire before Father left. With some hesitation Gabriel added another log. However, he placed it a bit too soon, and instead of intensifying the fire, it had the opposite effect. It smothered the fire, and for a time it was unclear if the fire would go out altogether or catch.

One can see such things with souls that have found Our Lord after a long time of distance. The soul may jump into many efforts to evangelize, and those efforts may grow to such an extent that one of two things could happen. One outcome may be that the soul finds a healthy balance between duties, time in prayer, and evangelization. Another outcome finds the soul out of balance. The soul buries itself with efforts to evangelize other souls at the expense of its own relationship with God. In an effort to win a great many souls for Our Lord, the one working loses his or her anchor, which is prayer. In this the soul becomes lost. The work which began for Our Lord has become the work of the soul. Without prayer the control of the work shifts to being guided by the soul instead of a compass of Our Lord through prayer. Our Lord wants to have the love of many souls, but He does not want to lose our love in the process. If this begins to happen, the soul can draw away and tend his fire until the fire is strong. Then the soul can again set to work but always with an eye that prayer is not overlooked so as to ensure that the fire always remains burning.

Goal: A soul can become smothered with the active life if silent prayer is neglected.

Sit quietly for five minutes, and imagine yourself just being at the foot of the Cross to silently show your love to Jesus.

Day 32

COME, HOLY SPIRIT. . .

Gabriel observed that each fire was different. In much the same way, the love that each one of us gives to God is unique. It is unlike the love of any other soul. If God does not have our love, He shall not find it anywhere else in the world. Thus, He will always pursue our love. This is as in Scripture when Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd (cf. Jn 10:11) who will leave the ninety- nine sheep to find the one lost sheep (cf. Mt 18:12-14).

Goal: The love each of us offers to God is unlike the love that any other soul offers Him.

Sit quietly for five minutes, and imagine yourself just being at the foot of the Cross to silently show your love to Jesus.

Day 33

COME, HOLY SPIRIT. . .

A fire had been burning all day, but during the night it appeared to go out. There were no visible flames in the morning and no smoke. Yet as Gabriel walked through the room, he heard a crack. It came, indeed, from a piece of wood still burning, still being consumed. The wood appeared to have ceased to burn, but, nonetheless, it was burning. Often when a soul is being consumed by the fire of Our Lord through suffering, this is a hidden suffering. No one sees the fire, but it is working deep within the wood. This slow burning can indeed reach the desired end, which is the wood’s being completely spent through the burning process. We see this in the story, “A Fire,” when Gabriel comes down one morning to find in the fireplace “no wood at all. Every bit of the wood had been consumed!”

Goal: One cannot evaluate the interior work Our Lord is doing simply from the outside.

Sit quietly for five minutes, and imagine yourself just being at the foot of the Cross to silently show your love to Jesus.
